About Shimla
The one-time summer capital of the British, Shimla is a gorgeous hill station and the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh. Well-known for its Victorian architecture, Shimla is a hub for India's tourism sector. Its name has been derived from the goddess Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali. The city has a large number of temples and palaces and is also well noted for its buildings styled in Tudorbethan and neo-Gothic architecture dating from the colonial era.

Set in the midst of impressive hills and dense jungles this hill town has its own charm. Its elegant streets, plummeting torrents and salubrious climate make it a thriving hotspot for honeymooners. Like all other Indian cities, fairs and festivals are the highlights of Shimla tourism, showcasing its rich heritage and culture. Himachal is known as the fruit-bowl of India. It has a thriving food processing industry that churns out fruit-based drinks, squashes and concentrates. The most famous flavours are Plum, Litchi, Strawberry, Mango and Guava. Languages spoken are Hindi, as also Punjabi and Pahari.

Best time to visit:

Shimla is beautiful throughout the year and can be visited in any month; however, September to June would be the best months for travelling to Shimla.
